Wednesday Jazz Night: Anna Walding & Charlie Chech

  • Avalon Bowlo Bowling Green Lane Avalon Beach, NSW, 2107 Australia (map)

Anna Walding

Anna’s musical journey began as an infant being the daughter of a singing mum and guitarist dad. At six she began singing and piano lessons with current principal director of Warringah Performing Arts, Mark Hall which continues to this day. Growing up, immersed in music of multiple genres, influenced not just by mum and dad but artists such as Eva Cassidy, Aretha Franklin, Prince and in early high school, queen of jazz Ella Fitzgerald via a CD from dad.

At the tender age of ten, Anna sang ‘Feed the Birds’ from Mary Poppins at school accompanied by dad Steve on guitar. Overcoming a bad case of nerves, Anna’s talent shone through, the forthcoming acclaim being a real confidence booster. More recently Anna’s musical collaboration with a couple of incredibly talented friends Thomas Odell and Charles Wilkinson and private lessons with Joy Yates have matured Anna as a fine jazz singer.

In 2018 Anna along with one of her bands won the Northern Composure Band competition. She has sung in churches and cathedrals in Greece and Poland at sixteen, organized and performed with a jazz quartet, a ‘Great Gatsby’ themed ballroom party at ICMS Manly. Anna’s performances span numerous outfits of varying size and genre from residencies to private parties all over Sydney.

One of the most telling testaments to Anna’s ability is to have been chosen on numerous occasions to join the band at Avalon Bowling club’s Wednesday night jazz. Band leader Billy Burton is an Australian jazz icon who has led bands at Chequers and the Chevron ‘Silver Spade’ and names artists from Shirley Bassey to Tom Jones and Stevie Wonder as stars he has worked with.
